Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is one of the most famous spiral galaxies in the sky — and for me one of the most beautiful objects I have photographed so far.

What is the Whirlpool Galaxy?

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a spiral galaxy that is currently interacting with a smaller companion galaxy (NGC 5195). This encounter creates the beautiful spiral arms and the visible “bridge” of gas and stars between them. It is about 23 million light years away.

Why Galaxies Are Special

Unlike most nebulae, galaxies are extremely far away. The light reaching us here has been traveling for millions of years. That alone is part of the fascination.

Personal Conclusion

M51 was an emotional image for me. An entire galaxy in a small frame. The thought of what is really happening out there makes it especially valuable to me.
