The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is one of the most beautiful and well-known spiral galaxies in the northern sky. For me, it was a nice conclusion to an intense phase of galaxy photography.

What is the Pinwheel Galaxy?

The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is a large, almost perfectly symmetrical spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It is particularly known for its many bright star-forming regions that appear as glowing dots scattered across its spiral arms. It lies about 21 million light years away.

What Makes Galaxies Special

Every time I photograph a galaxy, I think about how incredibly far away it is. The light reaching us here has traveled for millions of years. That alone is part of the appeal.

Final Thought

M101 was a nice final galaxy project for me in this phase. Just the thought of having an entire galaxy “in the box” is something very special to me.
