North America Nebula (NGC 7000)

The North America Nebula is huge, faint, and at the same time one of the most beautiful objects in the summer sky. For me it was a real challenge.

What is the North America Nebula?

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is a massive emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It has the shape of the North American continent (hence the name) and is extremely large but very faint. That’s why it needs many hours of exposure time to become visible.

The Difficulty

The nebula is extremely large and has very low contrast. With the Seestar, I collected data over several nights because one evening simply doesn’t produce enough signal. It took time — and patience.

My Conclusion

The North America Nebula showed me that some objects simply need time. And that even with small equipment, you can still capture something truly beautiful if you stick with it.
